How Disney Instills Greed and Consumerism in Babies as Young as Three Months Old

TruthOut.org / By Martha Sorren

I read the article "How Disney instills greed and consumerism in babies as young as three months old" by Martha Sorren of TruthOut.org written august 26, 2011. In today's American culture the media has become a big part of the regular person’s everyday life, and the Disney channel is a huge part of the media. The Disney Company owns six motion picture studios, ABC television network and its 226 stations, multiple cable television networks, 227 radio stations, four music companies, three cruise lines, theatrical production companies, publishing houses, 15 magazine titles and five video game development studios. Most people don't realize how much Disney really has control over today's media, because this is not what most people think about when they think of Disney. They think of it as the episodes of Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck singing that they watched on TV when they were younger or the Little Mermaid or Cinderella and all the other princesses associated with Disney. The Disney Company really starts kids out on their products at a young age. Baby Einstein was actually produced as a way to get baby's to be hooked on TV earlier as well as their products, even as early as three months old. The company said they produced these products to entertain and educate the kids. The Disney company actually convinced many parents that if you let your child watch TV it will speed up there speech development, but in reality it actually puts them behind other children. Although parents don't want to believe it, a study done by the journal of Pediatrics confirmed that infants who watched an hour or more of television a day displayed slower language development. Even after this study was publicized a 2007 study still showed that 48 percent of parents thought these videos had a positive effect on young children. Disney doesn’t care about the kids. They only care that these are the consumers that don’t know why they want something, they just know they want it and that their parents will buy it for them if they scream and cry enough. This is what Disney is hoping will happen. "It doesn't matter whether the films are cute or the theme parks enjoyable - there is something bigger lying underneath this family-friendly exterior. Disney is, after all, a business. They want to make money." this is said by Giroux in his book The Mouse that Roared.
I thought this was a very interesting article to read. I had no idea that the Disney Company owned that many things and had that much control over the media. It makes me wonder how much our opinions are swayed by the culture and the media because we don't know where the source is coming from. I remember when I was younger I watched shows like The Big Comfy Couch and Blue’s Clues and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Now younger and younger kids are watching shows that are not appropriate for their age and maturity level. I never watched shows like 16 and pregnant when I was little. I don't remember shows like that when I was younger. I watched Lizzie Maguire and I think that was the worst one I watched. I really don’t like that Disney lied to all those parents just make money. Of course parents are going to want to do anything that can help their child have a better life in the future. I don't think kids use their imagination as much as kids used to because why pretend a stick is a wand when you can just ask your parents to buy you a real looking one. I think that watching TV at such a young age can be damaging to a child. They don’t learn to use their social skills because all they do is sit in front of a TV. They don’t go out and play with other kids. Parents are using the TV as a babysitter for them instead of actually sitting down and reading a book with them. Reading to them furthers there language development even more than watching TV because they can see your face as you read and how your voice changes with enthusiasm. How i see it Disney is making life long customers and don't care about the affects they have on a child.

Abducted Canadian Boy Returned Home Unharmed

ABC News’ Olivia Katrandjian reports:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/09/abducted-canadian-boy-returned-home-unharmed/

I read the article abducted Canadian boy returned home unharmed by ABC's Olivia Katrandjian reported on September 11 2011.A Canadian three year old boy Kienan Hebert was abducted from his bedroom on  Wednesday night September 7th.His parents put him to be that night and woke up to find him not in his bedroom.after several days of searching for the boy.The Canadian royal police go an anonymous a phone call at 3am in the morning saying that the little boy was back at home. The police went to the child's home to see him sitting on the couch. The police are not sure how the suspect got in and out with out being notice with the cops watching the house. He was returned right after a plea from his parents for them" to have a change of heart and bring their son home".he was taken right to the hospital to make sure he was okay he appears to be unharmed all his parents had to say was "Kienan is happily home," his emotional father, Paul Hebert, told reporters. "He's playing with his brothers and sisters."the officer in charge said “We’ve got a child back. We’ve got a child returned. I’ve never been able to say that,” Moskaluk said. “Half of this is over now.”although the child has been returned they now need to find the suspect.the only lead the police have to go on is the sex offender Randall Hopley who live in the same neighborhood they are following this lead because Hopley has at least 11 assault and burglary convictions, and was also accused of attempting to abduct and molest a Sparwood boy in 2007.

As i was reading this article i was trying to figure out why a person would kidnap a child, they are so innocent. From just what i read they don't seem to have very good police officers up in Canada how did they not see the suspect come and bring the child home and leave with out getting caught.the police are refusing to tell how many officers were watching the house.I wonder if this ever happens in America because poor police work we lose child abductors.why the suspect who had so many assault charges on him hadn't already been arrested is kind of a weird thing to find out and why did he all of the sudden just decide to bring him back to his parents.Even the officer said he has never heard of a case where the child is returned unharmed.

The Horrific Labor Practices Behind Your iPhone

MEDIA

http://www.alternet.org/media/152270/the_horrific_labor_practices_behind_your_iphone?page=3

I read the article the horrific labor practices behind your iphone by Sophia Cheng ,In this article Foxconn Technology Group is talking about  getting rid of people in there factory and putting robots in.This is one of the ideas that the company has to reduce the suicide rates of the iphone company workers. From 2007 -2010 twenty five worker have attempted suicide with twenty one succeeding  "With a labor force of 1.2 million people, Foxconn is China’s largest private employer and biggest exporter".The highest payed employees are only getting $1.18 an hour .The conditions the employees are working in are notorious conditions. They are not allowed to stretch or talk and are only allowed 10 min bathroom breaks. They do all this to keep them from having any type of social life. "Industry analyst estimates that Apple spends only $9 on labor for every $499 iPad. That $9 is apparently too expensive, since Foxconn has been taking steps to lower labor costs, first with the inland factories and now with the introduction of a one-million robot workforce."

when I read this article i thought another sweat shop whats new it happens all over the world. Then i stopped to read this article and it mad me really upset, that they are treating their workers in such an inhumane way not allowing them to make any type of connection. Then of course they are committing suicide they have no one to talk to can you imagine if you never had a friend to talk to and vent to how much built up stress you would have.I think that we should not switch to robots so many people are going to lose their jobs and then how are they going to feed their families and where are they going to live. The workers get provided a room kind of like a dorm that they live in.So they would not only lose there job they would lose food and a roof over there Head although yes we do have the technology to have robots do the work is it really such a good idea to do so right now .

Pentagon chief says threat of another 9/11 is real

By ROBERT BURNS, AP

  http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20110906/US.Panetta.Sept.11/

In this article the pentagon chief leon Panetta talks about the threat of another attack "The potential for that kind of attack remains very real," he said from the 10th floor of 7 World Trade Center, he went and saw the almost finished memorial of every person who died in the twin towers and also at the pentagon. He believes that there is going to be another attack because they didn’t finish their mission last time. Panetta says that the most dangerous nodes are now outside of Pakistan and Afghanistan They suspect that they wanted to hit the white house but got taken over by the passengers so they crashed the plane flight 93 into Pennsylvania.

Reading this article was scary for me because they don't know for sure where they are going to strike next for all they know it could be the mall of America I live only 15 minutes from there I can’t imagine how something like that would impact us all. It would be like living in a war zone. I still remember sitting in my class room and looking up at the TV. and seeing the buildings falling down I remember a boy in my class thought we were watching a movie and then our teacher started to freak out i was only in third grade i was scared out of my mind. They just now are finishing the memorial for all the lives that were lost. If it were to happen here it would affect me so much more, what if my family member was there when it happened people go to the mall all the time but what if they didn't come back.
